Looking star Frankie Alvarez: ‘We’re past ‘Just Jack’ from Will & Grace’
By Nick Bond
Frankie Alvarez, who plays troubled artist Agustin on the acclaimed gay-themed drama Looking, strips off for a revealing shoot in the Naked Issue of Attitude, downloadable now and in shops on Wednesday.
And Alvarez reveals just as much in his interview with Attitude. The actor – one of the few stars on the show who isn’t actually gay in real life – said he hadn’t been shocked by the frank depiction of gay sex on display in Looking.
“Nothing in the series has shocked me because I hear all the stories from my gay friends. In fact some of their stories are much more shocking,” he laughs.
Alvarez also talks about how Looking, screening now on Sky Atlantic, serves as part of the evolution of gay characters on television:
“Previously gay characters were played for laughs on TV or in movies, but we are playing three-dimensional gay men and the audience can all see themselves whether they are straight, gay, black or white.
“We don’t want to give you another ‘Just Jack’ from Will & Grace. We’re past that! That’s not to say these characters can’t be seen or told anymore, but we’ve told them already.”
You can read the full interview with Frankie, and check out more of his racy naked shoot, in the new issue of Attitude – the Naked Issue – which is available to download to your mobile, iPad or tablet device now, at Pocketmags.com/Attitude.

We also speak to Newsnight and Dragon’s Den host Evan Davies in his first ever gay press interview, where he discusses the state of British politics ahead of May’s general election and being one of the most prominent gay men on TV.
The issue will be out in shops on Wednesday (February 4) and you can also have it delivered directly to your door at newsstand.co.uk.
