Madonna has spoken out about Pussy Riot being whipped by police in Russia yesterday (February 19).

The Ray Of Light singer has long supported the group, and recently introduced Pussy Riot’s Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina (pictured right with the singer) at an Amnesty International concert in New York.

Writing on Instagram earlier today (February 20), Madonna said: “Are you kidding me? Are the police in Russia actually whipping Pussy Riot for making music on the streets?

“Is this the dark ages? GOD bless P. R. They are fearless! #artforfreedom #revolutionoflove.”

Pussy Riot were struck with horsewhips by Russian police in Sochi yesterday (February 19) as they tried to start an impromptu performance under a sign advertising the Winter Olympics in Sochi – watch a video of the incident here.
