Man arrested after Jack Monroe homophobic Twitter abuse

A 22-year-old man has been arrested after sending homophobic abuse to journalist Jack Monroe on Twitter.
The poster took on the handle of @Alex_WoodUKIP, masquerading as the former UKIP candidate who was once suspended after being photographed giving a Nazi-style salute.
In one message he told the Guardian writer: “Your sick form of Lesbianism and militant queerism is destroying this country. Get out and give us Britain back! #VoteUKIP.”
Another added: “I think you’re an absolute disgrace as well, Queers should all be sterilised. #VoteUKIP2015.”
The account swung into action after Monroe wrote a piece following Thursday’s election debate, in which she was critical of UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s performance.
God it’s men like this that make me wish I wasn’t a lesbian. Be still my beating heart for the charm and intellect. pic.twitter.com/yjIKeHXArw

The food writer quit the social media website, calling on supporters not to “retaliate to the trolls and abusers with abuse. Not in my name.”
Avon and Somerset Police arrested a man yesterday (April 18), as their investigation continued. The Twitter account has since been suspended.
UKIP also moved to disassociate itself from the account, and confirmed that Wood had left the party earlier this year.
