A Texas man involved in a fatal crash which resulted in the death of his boyfriend has been charged with murder, after it emerged he refused to let him out of the vehicle before the accident.
Jesus Mireles, 23, was reportedly driving at speeds of up to 100mph in El Paso with his boyfriend, 25-year-old Daniel Mendoza, sat in the passenger seat before crashing into three stationary vehicles in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 9).
Daniel Mendoza (l) had been dating Jesus Mireles for less than six months before Sunday’s tragic crash.
Daniel died at University Medical Center as result of his injuries, while Mireles, who remains in hospital in recovery, admitted to police that he had been drinking before getting behind the wheel.
However, after originally facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter, Mireles is now facing murder charges, after police revealed that Daniel had dialled 911 while in the car just minutes before the crash.
He told emergency dispatchers that to tell them that Mireles was speeding and running red lights, and that he would not let him out of the vehicle despite his pleas.
Police were unable to locate the car before being called to the site of the accident, where both Mireles and Mendoza were found with serious injuries.
A friend of Daniel’s, Israel Chavez, said he had been with the couple at a party on Saturday night, where the pair had been seen arguing. They reportedly began dating in June this year.
“I never really thought it was going to go that far to where [Mireles] was going to end up hurting my friend,” he told KDBC-TV. “For him to have called 911 I would assume that he just wanted out of the car. So I just can’t bear to think that he was terrified and wanted to get out and then that happened.”
Chavez added that he hopes people will remember Daniel for the way he lived his life, rather than the tragic way in which it was taken.
“He was an amazing person and amazing human being he loved animals loved his family,” he said.
The local LGBT comminuty came together in the wake of the tragedy to hold a memorial in Daniel’s honour last night (December 9), while a GoFundMe page has been set up to help his family with funeral costs.
