A man who was filmed attacking a transgender woman in Paris has been jailed for 10 months, with four months parole.
In March this year, Julia Boyer, 31, was trying to make her way to the metro in the French capital when she was heckled and abused by Algerian men who were protesting the former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Boyer – who reportedly started gender confirmation surgery eight months ago – was filmed being abused and beaten during the protest and the footage went viral.
The footage shows her confronting one of the men who proceeded to beat her repeatedly across the arm.
Members of the crowd jeered in the background while some tried to intervene before police arrived who protected her from any further assaults.
Now, the Paris Criminal Court ordered 23-year-old Seddik A to abstain from contacting the victim and was ordered to pay €3,500 and €1,500 to each of the three LGBTQ defence associations that supported the victim.
He was also sentenced to 10 months in prison, according to the Daily Mail.
Boyer said: “Justice has been served. I am not sure prison is the best solution, but I hope he will think about this and not do it again.”
