Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto win Golden Globes for Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto triumphed at the Golden Globe Awards last night (January 12) for their performances in Dallas Buyers Club.
McConaughey described the film as an “underdog” in his acceptance speech, emphasising the long journey that the project has taken to reach awards season.
The actor stars as Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who is told that he is HIV-positive and only has one month to live.
In his Best Actor acceptance speech, McConaughey said: “Alright, alright, alright. This was unexpected, but graciously accepted. Respect to the nominees, Mr. Redford, Mr. Hanks, Chiwetel. Idris. It’s great company to be in.
“This film, Ron’s story, was an underdog. For 20 years it was an underdog; turned down 86 times; nobody wanted to put up money for it. We got the right people together five years ago, stuck to it, put some skin in the game, and here it is.”
Meanwhile, Leto, 42, won Best Supporting Actor for his role as transgender AIDS activist Rayon in the movie.
“I’d like this opportunity to clear up a few things. I did not ever use any prosthetics in this film. That tiny little Brazilian bubble butt was all mine,” the Thirty Seconds to Mars star explained.
He added: “It was a very transformative role, I had to do a lot of things to prepare. One of the things I did was wax my entire body including my eyebrows.”
Attitude favourite Behind the Candelabra collected two prizes as Michael Douglas won for his portrayal of Liberace. It also won for Best TV Movie or Miniseries.
American Hustle was the big winner in the film categories, taking home the trophy for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), as well as acting prizes for stars Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence.
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) were the other big winners in the acting categories, while 12 Years a Slave won Best Motion Picture (Drama).
In the TV categories, Breaking Bad – which wrapped its final season last year – scooped two awards for Best Drama Series and Best Actor (Bryan Cranston). Other winners included Amy Poehler for Parks And Recreation and Elisabeth Moss for Top Of The Lake.
