Michael Sam: ‘I’m not the only gay guy in the NFL’
By Josh Haggis
Michael Sam has claimed that he’s not the only gay man in the NFL.
Sam, who found himself at the centre of a media frenzy last year after he became the first ever openly gay man to be drafted into the NFL, has suggested that that there are still players in the league who are yet to come out publicly.
“I’m just gonna say I’m not the only one in the NFL that is gay, I’m just the only one that is out,” Sam told the Quinnipiac Chronicle. “They want to protect their livelihood. But there will be a time [when they come out]. There’s going to be a day.”
Sam, who caused controversy when he kissed his boyfriend live on US television when he was told he’d been drafted, went on to suggest that if he still had the choice, he would never have come out publicly.
“If I had my choice, I would have never came out in a public manner,” he added. “My plan was not to come out publicly. But God had other plans, so I did what I did.”
