Michigan senate passes bill punishing anal sex with 15 years prison

Those who violate bans on anal sex in the US state of Michigan now face up to 15 years prison time, after the Michigan Senate passed a controversial bill last Thursday (February 4), and despite the US Supreme Court ruling the legislation to be unconstitutional.

While the bill does not specifically target the gay community, the legislation outlaws anal sex completely, reports New Now Next.

Sponsored by Senator Rick Jones, the bill is linked to the prevention of bestiality.

“A person who commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature with mankind or with any animal is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for no more than 15 years,” it reads.

If the person is found to a “sexually delinquent person” or an existing sex offender, they will face a life term in prison.

The senator who introduced the bill, Rick Jones, said attempts to revise the clause to remove the wording of “mankind” as it passes in the House of Representatives could jeopardise the entire bill.

“The minute I cross that line and I start talking about the other stuff, I won’t even get another hearing. It’ll be done,” said Jones.

“Nobody wants to touch it. I would rather not even bring up the topic, because I know what would happen. You’d get both sides screaming and you end up with a big fight that’s not needed because it’s unconstitutional.”

Twelve US states including Michigan have anti-sodomy legislation, even though the US Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional in the 2003 case Lawrence v. Texas.
