‘Modern Family’ actress Elizabeth Pena has died, aged 55

Cuban-American actress Elizabeth Pena has died at the age of 55.
In recent years, Pena was seen as Maritza, the mother of Sofia Vergara’s character, Gloria, in two episodes of Modern Family. She won an Independent Spirit Award in 1997 for her role in thriller film Lone Star alongside Matthew McConaughey and Chris Cooper.
Her other recent TV appearances included guest roles in Ghost Whisperer, NCIS and Without A Trace. She was also known for her voiceover work, which included a starring role as Mirage in Disney Pixar’s 2004 animated hit, The Incredibles.
Pena’s acting career spanned over four decades and included roles in numerous movies including La Bamba, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Jacob’s Ladder, Rush Hour and the 2005 LGBT-themed drama Transamerica.
Elizabeth Pena died of natural causes related to a recent illness, her manager told the press. She is survived by her husband and two children, as well as by her mother and sister.
