More than 300 same-sex couples tied the knot in Taiwan just six hours after marriage equality became legal.
Last week, in a landmark ruling, Taiwan became the first Asian place to legalise same-sex marriage and today (May 24) the law came into effect and hundreds of same-sex couples celebrated the new law by celebrating their love.
Around 363 – 116 male and 247 female couples – registered for marriage and the numbers are expected to climb further and further before the end of working hours today.
According to FocusTaiwan, New Taipei City has registered 74 married same-sex couples, followed by Kaohsiung City with 58 and Taipei City with 55.
Deputy Interior Minister Chen Tsung-yen told CNA: “The atmosphere at local household registration offices have been good and happy.”
Last weekend, two same-sex couples and one heterosexual couple celebrated the best way possible – a joint wedding.
