A mother has plead guilty to the murder of her 8-year-old son.
Gabriel Fernandez was admitted to hospital on May 22, 2013 after he was found unresponsive at his mother’s home in Palmdale. He died two days later after being declared brain dead and placed on life support.
A court was told how the child’s parents, Gabriel Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre, tortured the innocent little boy to death because they believed he was gay.
Aguirre was convicted of first-degree murder in November last year, and while the death sentence was recommended, he won’t be sentenced until March 8.
Yesterday afternoon (Feb 15), Fernandez’s mother, Aguirre, followed in the footsteps of her husband and entered a guilty plea to the court.
Her sentencing will follow on June 8, and lawyers are pushing for the death penalty. However, the defence is claiming that her low IQ should disqualify her from such a punishment.
During the case, the court heard horrific details of the abuse that the 8-year-old suffered at the hands of those who were supposed to love and support him.
Aguirre and his partner Fernandez beat and bit Gabriel, burned him with cigarettes, shot him with a B.B. gun, whipped him, starved him, fed him cat litter, and kept him gagged and bound before his body was discovered.
They also fed the eight-year-old both cat feces and his own vomit during that time.
After he was murdered, the couple had called the emergency services that treated Gabriel, but only in an attempt to cover up their crimes, the prosecutor said.
“They didn’t call 911 to help Gabriel. They called 911 to cover up what they did,” he said. “The defendant lied on the 911 call.”
