National AIDS Trust launch crowdfunder to fight NHS England PrEP appeal

By Will Stroude

The UK’s largest HIV and AIDS charity, the National AIDS Trust has kicked off its bid to ensure that PrEP becomes available on the NHS with a crowdfunding appeal.

NHS England drew criticism from HIV charities when it announced it would appeal the high court ruling that found it was responsible for providing PrEP to at-risk groups, including men who sleep with other men. The decision sparked a wave of coverage in the media that many deemed divisive and homophobic.

Setting out the case for PrEP, the NAT wrote on the crowdfunding site, “PrEP could be the beginning of the end for HIV – a condition more than 6,000 people a year are diagnosed with in the UK.

“The future of HIV prevention is at stake. HIV acquisition is increasing among gay men in England, and remains stubbornly high for other groups. PrEP has the potential to turn the tide on the epidemic – but for that to happen it needs to be available to everyone who needs it”.

The hearing is set to take place on the 15th September, with funds raised being used to cover the costs incurred from the hearing.

The crowdfunder can be found here.
