National Theatre of Scotland launches transgender theatre project

By Troy Nankervis

The National Theatre of Scotland is inviting trans and non-binary people from across the world to join an upcoming project as apart of the Glasgow venue’s 10th anniversary season.

NTS associate artist and theatre maker Cora Bissett is directing Adam, a production described as “a bold exploration of the experience of a young transgender person”.

“My team [and I] are currently working on an exciting new production, which is based on the very real story of a young trans man who flees from Egypt, and ends up in Scotland,” she says.

“This is the story of Adam. Adam was born into a girl’s body, but always knew he was a boy. And in the city where Adam grew up, that truth could cost you your life.”

Bissett is inviting singers from across the globe, who identify as trans or non-binary, to submit audio recordings to be mixed by composer Jocelyn Pook into the production’s final score.

“We’re keen to connect with you wherever you are in the world, geography and language is no boundary,” says Bissett.

The project is playing as a double bill alongside Eve, developed by transgender playwright Jo Clifford and theatre-maker Chris Goode. Both productions are to explore themes that will resonate with the transgender community.

Laurie Sansom, Artistic Director, National Theatre of Scotland said the entire 10th anniversary season would create a link between the themes of journey and Scotland’s connection to the world.

“With the remainder of our 10th birthday programme, we are celebrating Scotland’s relationship with the world and extraordinary journeys made by individuals of both a deeply personal and a mythological nature,” she says.

“It has also been an exhilarating journey for Scotland’s first national theatre. We wish to thank all the artists, professional partners, technical teams, companies and audiences who have joined us on the road thus far.”

Participants have until 21 March 2016 to register their interest for the Adam World Choir.
