New Republican bill could ban US embassies from flying the rainbow flag
Representative Jeff Duncan wants to stop US embassies from flying any flag that isn't the US flag.
A Republican congressman has introduced a new bill to ban US embassies from flying the rainbow flag.
Last week, representative Jeff Duncan introduced House Resolution 6450, which bans US embassies from displaying any flag or emblem that isn’t the American flag.
The Old Glory Only Act was introduced on Thursday (July 19) and by the next day, around 26 other Republicans had signed the bill.
In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Duncan said: “The United States flag is the single greatest symbol of freedom the world has ever known, and there’s no reason for anything but Old Glory to be flying over our embassies and posts around the globe.”
The news comes after US embassies flew the rainbow flag in solidarity with the LGBT community.
The US embassy of Belize reportedly flew the rainbow flag last month to coincide with Pride Month. The US embassy of Jamaica flew the rainbow flag in 2016 following the Pulse massacre.
