Norwegian politician admits he feels ‘guilty’ that his rapist has been deported
“I am a heterosexual man who was raped by a Somalian asylum seeker.”
Karsten Nordal Hauken, a Socialist politician from Norway, who describes himself as feminist and anti-racist, has revealed how an overwhelming sense of guilt has hit him after learning that his attacker was being deported.
Writing for NRK, in a series about mental health, Nordal Hauken discussed how the incident turned his life upside-down. “My life fell into ruin,” he said.
The Norwegian ‘feminist, anti-racist’ politician was raped in his home by an asylum seeker, originally from Somalia. The attack left him depressed and isolated, a source reports. His attacker was subsequently sentenced to 4.5 years imprisonment.
When Nordal Hauken received a phonecall from the prison informing him that his attacker was being deported, he says he “felt relief and happiness that he would be gone forever.”
“I felt like the Norwegian State had taken responsibility to carry out the ultimate revenge, like an angry father confronting it’s child’s attacker.”
But the victim of the attack has also revealed how his attacker’s punishment has left him feeling “a strong feeling of guilt and responsibility”.
Despite the psychological impact of the assault, Nordal Hauken felt “guilty about him being sent out of the country… I was the reason that he would not be in Norway anymore, but rather sent to a dark uncertain future in Somalia.”
The brave politician added that he doesn’t feel anger towards the man that attacked him. In an attempt to rationalise the act of violence, he said: “I see him mostly like a product of an unfair world, a product of an upbringing marked by war and despair.”
