Norwich City Football Club have launched an investigation into allegations of homophobic abuse during their home match against Birmingham City this Sunday (September 21).
The probe comes following a complaint from a Norwich FC fan that a fellow supporter was making homophobic remarks during half-time.
In response to the allegations, a statement on the Championship team’s website reads:
“We are investigating an allegation of homophobic abuse by a home supporter at half-time during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Birmingham City at Carrow Road.
Another City fan has made a complaint to Kick It Out and the Club using our Safeguarding reporting hotline, set up to enable fans to report any incidents of discriminatory, abusive or otherwise unacceptable behaviour they witness during matches.
Fans are reminded the Club has a zero-tolerance stance on all forms of discrimination and anyone found guilty of discrimination will be banned from Carrow Road.”
In a statement to to EDP24.com, a spokesperson for Norfolk Police added: “We are aware of allegations of homophobic abuse at the Norwich match against Birmingham City at Carrow Road on Saturday. However, we have not received any formal complaint.”
The issue of homophobia in football has been thrust into the spotlight again this month with the launch of a second ‘Rainbow Laces’ campaign by Paddy Power, with support from LGB charity Stonewall – to check out a TV advert for the anti-homophobia campaign click here.
Norwich City FC had already made a commitment to the ‘Rainbow Laces’ campaign prior to the alleged incident on Sunday, saying: “Norwich City will be joining other clubs in the Premier League and Football League in supporting the campaign this year as part of our on-going commitment to eradicating all forms of discrimination from the game.”
