Nyle DiMarco wins America’s Next Top Model

By Troy Nankervis

One of Attitude’s favourite gay models Nyle DiMarco was crowned winner of America’s Next Top Model by Tyra Banks on Friday night.

The title makes the 26-year-old “sexually fluid” model, also a deaf man, the last ever winner in the hit competition, which wraps up 22 seasons this year after the CW network decided to not renew.

“I don’t really know to put it into words”, said DiMarco of the win.

“But it means bigger things are coming for me and the deaf community.”

In a video published by The Daily Moth shortly after the win, DiMarco was asked whether deaf viewers were surprised he won.

“I don’t think we underestimate each other, it’s more that we are so used to deaf contestants, if they are on a reality show, it’s already a “win,” because, like I said on ANTM, because the hearing public would think that having a deaf contestant on the show is a victory in itself,” he said.

“Why should the deaf person also win? The person’s already in the show!” But we’re skilled people and we deserve to win. And I’m really grateful to win it all.”

DiMacro added he felt “intimidated” in the beginning of the competition by “all the gorgeous models”.

“It was tough. I did think I would be eliminated after making the top eight,” he said.

“I had a feeling I would be out. But when I start winning, I realised I’m learning, I can learn daily, and just roll with it.”

Overnight, Tyra Banks tweeted to DiMarco, “I’m just a vessel to allow your greatness to be experienced by the world.”
