Orlando Cruz to become first gay world boxing champion?

Orlando Cruz previously vowed to make history by becoming the first gay world boxing champion and it looks like he’ll do just that today (November 26).

The Puerto Rican boxer is hoping to beat WBO World Lightweight Terry Flanagan in Cardiff, break the record and inspired the LGBT community.

Speaking to Gay Star News, Cruz said: “Terry Flanagan is a true World Champion and will defend his title with everything he has.”

“However, I am prepared and ready for victory and to be crowned the new World champion. I want to inspire the gay community by becoming a World Champion on Saturday.”

Despite reports of increasing homophobia in Sports, Cruz states that everyone has been supportive of him since coming out.

“Terry is a great Champion and a real people’s person. More importantly, he respects my life and my choices. He sees the man boxing him and that’s it. Everyone has been very supportive since I came out three years ago. I have the support of my family, friends and fans.”

He adds, “When I look at my story, it makes me hopeful that more people will be inspired to come out. Right now, my focus is fully on the big fight on Saturday and winning the WBO Lightweight belt.”

If Cruz beats Flanagan tonight, he will break the record and become the first gay World Boxing Champion and he’s been on a winning streak so far, winning his last fight in July after dedicating it to the victims of the Pulse shooting in Orlando, Florida.
