Oscars 2014: American Hustle, Gravity lead nominations

American Hustle
and Gravity lead the 2014 Oscar nominations.
The films earned themselves ten nominations apiece, while Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave followed with nine nods.
Dallas Buyers Club – which tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who is told that he is HIV-positive and only has one month to live – scored six nominations.
American Hustle, Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyers Club will contest the Best Picture category, alongside Philomena, Captain Phillips, Her, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) has the chance to win his first Academy Award after being nominated for Best Actor.
He will face competition from Christian Bale (American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).
2010 winner Sandra Bullock (Gravity) has scored herself another nomination in the Best Actress category; she is joined by Amy Adams (American Hustle), Judi Dench (Philomena), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Meryl Streep (August: Osage County).
The Best Supporting Actor nominees are Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence could win her second Oscar in as many years after her performance in American Hustle was acknowledged by the Academy.
She is joined in the Best Supporting Actress category by Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and June Squibb (Nebraska).
The 86th Annual Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, March 2.
