Oscars 2015: Dakota Johnson & mum Melanie Griffith share awkward ’50 Shades’ exchange
By Will Stroude
It might be breaking box office records, but it seems that there’s at least one person who’s not getting swept in 50 Shades fever – leading actress Dakota Johnson’s mum, Melanie Griffith.
At last night’s 87th Academy Awards, the pair shared an awkward exchange on the red carpet when ABC’s Lara Spencer brought up the topic of Johnson’s racy breakout role as Anastasia Steele in the movie adaptation of EL James’ best-selling novel.
Asked if she’d seen her daughter’s performance in the erotic drama, 57-year-old Griffith curtly replied “No.”
The Working Girl star added: “I don’t think I can. I think it would be strange.”
When her daughter says that she would be “fine” with her mum seeing it, Griffith continued: “We;; she’s a really good actress. I don’t need to see that to know how good she is.”
A wounded-looking Johnson replies: “Alright, you don’t have to see it! God! I’m like ‘you can see it,’ and you’re like ‘No’!”
“If she tells me to see it, I’ll see it”, Griffith eventually concedes.
