Outdated rules a drag at this London gentlemen’s club

By Troy Nankervis

As one of London’s last remaining gentleman’s clubs resolved to sustain it’s ban on women patronage, one of its members has canvassed a creative solution to side-step the policy.

London’s infamous Garrick Club has maintained a ban to keep out women since it began operation back in 1831.

Earlier this year, a number of proposals to lift the 180-year ban failed to attract a two-thirds majority vote, required to change the antiquated policy, reaching just 50.5% of support from existing members, reports The Evening Standard.

But in his article A Bit of a Drag, published in the club’s own Garrick Magazine, member and A Clockwork Orange actor Clive Francis has suggested, “all is not lost”.

“There is a glimmer of hope at hand, a compromise,” he said.

“From what I can gather, although women may not become members, there is nothing to stop members becoming women… as long as they’re wearing a tie.”

To the Garrick Club, Francis has suggested that a “Garrick Drag Dinner” be held to “soften the blow for those whose fervent wish to see ladies enter our ranks as members was dashed”.

“I have had an occasional foray into fishnets, as an all-singing, all-dancing hag in D Potter’s Lipstick on Your Collar,” he said.

“I am sure there have been many other worthy members who have at one time or another enjoyed the fragrant attire of the female undergarment.”
