Gay rights campaigner Paul Cottingham – civil partner of former EastEnders actor and Labour MEP Michael Cashman – has died, aged 50.
The humanitarian, activist and former actor passed away last night (October 23) following a long battle with cancer.
Cottingham worked with a number of gay rights organisations such as The Kaleidoscope Trust – which promotes the rights of LGBT people internationally – and also served as a researcher during his partner’s time as an MEP.
Paul Cottingham and Michael Cashman were introduced in 1983 by their mutual friend Barbara Windsor. After more than 20 years together, the couple entered into a civil partnership in March 2006.
Many have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to Cottingham and his work, including Labour MP Harriet Harman and former Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has also paid tribute to Cottingham, writing on Facebook: “This is very sad news. Paul was a dear friend, a lovely warm hearted and generous spirited person who I shall miss greatly. He and Michael were a wonderful couple, enormous fun to be with and so kind to me and Cherie. My deepest condolences to Michael and to all Paul’s family.”
