Pete Buttigieg and his partner, Chasten, have shared their first picture with their new children, saying they are “delighted to welcome” the twins, Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg.
The couple announced in August that they were “overjoyed” to be becoming parents after previously speaking about their frustration with the adoption process.
Mr. Buttigieg made history as the first out gay man to run for President of the United States before dropping out. Later, he became the first out gay US cabinet member when he was confirmed as Transportation Secretary under President Biden.
“Beyond thankful”
In a heartwarming image of the couple shared on social media, Pete and Chasten can be seen sharing a hospital bed and smiling while each holding one of their new bundles of joy.
Pete says: “Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents. We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family.”

The couple were met with a plethora of well-wishers congratulating them on the twin’ arrival.
In August, Pete and Chasten announced that they’d become parents, saying they’d wanted to “grow their family” for some time. At the time they added that the process wasn’t completed, so it’s nice to see that everything seems to have worked out well!
Speaking to the Washington Post in July about the adoption process, Chasten detailed how it can be frustrating after they received a call saying there was a child ready for them only for the mother to change her mind.
“It’s a really weird cycle of anger and frustration and hope,” Chasten told the Post. “You think it’s finally happening and you get so excited, and then it’s gone.”
Pete, 39, was named Attitude’s Person of the Year in 2020.
