Piers Morgan has cited a photo of Tom Daley knitting as evidence that “no one cares about the Olympics.”

The former Good Morning Britain host made the claim on Twitter earlier this week after diver Tom was seen with his needles in the stands during the women’s 3m springboard final.

Tom – who won gold in Tokyo in the men’s synchronized 10m platform with partner Matty Lee – later revealed he’d been knitting a dog jumper. (We’re also still obsessed with his cat couch.)

“I rest my case”

The wider version of the picture shows other athletes in the stands with their faces fixed on their phones.

Nevertheless, Piers singled out the 27-year-old on Twitter, saying: “People attacked me for saying nobody cares about these Olympics (for reasons beyond control of the athletes).

In an Instagram post, Tom recently told followers of his dedicated knitting account that he has taken up the hobby as a way of relieving stress.

“The one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching,” the husband of Dustin Lance Black explained.
