A popular US weatherman has come out as gay.

Adam Joseph, a meteorologist at 6ABC’s Action News in Philadelphia, came out as gay as he shared the news that he and his partner, Karl, have welcomed the birth of their newborn son, Jacob.

Posting on Facebook from the hospital shortly after the birth, Joseph said the couple were “overjoyed”. See his status update below.

Speaking afterwards about his decision to come out, Joseph told Philly.com that although he was initially hesitant, he was ultimately motivated to speak out by becoming a father.

“From the day he was born, I want [my son] to understand that families come in all shapes, sizes and colours,” Joseph said.

“In our eyes, as long as there is unconditional love for a child, it doesn’t matter who that child looks up to or leans on,” he continued. “Was I hesitant? Maybe for one split second and then it passed. This is unconditional love and hope. I truly wish that every person wanting a family can feel this overwhelming happiness and joy.”
