Potential Presidential candidate: ‘Gay sex in prison proves that being gay is a choice’
By Josh Haggis
A US politician has argued that prisons prove that homosexuality is a choice.
Ben Carson, a potential Republican Presidential candidate for 2016, made the controversial remarks during an interview on CNN this week when discussing his feelings about the LGBT community comparing the gay rights movement to the black civil rights movement.
“You can’t say it’s the same as slavery because people have no control over their race,” said Carson. “A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”
Carson went on to add that despite his views, he’s not against gay couples people given the same rights as straight couples – as long as the traditional definition of marriage isn’t altered.
“Why do gay people want to get married? Why do they say they want to get married? Because they want to have various rights – property rights, visitation rights,” he continued. “Why can’t any two human beings, I don’t care what their sexual orientation is, why can’t they have the legal right to do those things? That does not require changing the definition of marriage.”
