Retired NFL player Derrick Ward has branded out gay athlete Michael Sam “disgusting” for kissing his boyfriend on TV after discovering he had been drafted into The National Football League (NFL) on Saturday.

Sam, 24, broke down in tears as he was told over the phone that the St. Louis Rams had selected him for their team – and then kissed his boyfriend to celebrate the life-changing news.

However, 33-year-old Ward, a former Super Bowl winner, was not impressed with what he saw on TV and took to Twitter to voice his opinion.

After receiving criticism from some of Twitter followers, Ward returned to Twitter to insist his comments were not homophobic – at length.

Ward later re-iterated his point, adding: “Even if he kissed a girl I woulda said the same thing.”
