‘Romy & Michele’: Lisa Kudrow, Mira Sorvino want sequel
By Will Stroude
Mira Sorvino has confirmed that she and Lisa Kudrow want to make a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion – but says that Disney is yet to get on board with the idea.
The pair starred in the cult 1997 comedy flick as Romy White and Michele Weinberger, a pair of shop assistants who invent fake careers in order to impress their former classmates at their ten-year high school reunion.
“Disney, if you’re listening – everybody wants it!” Sorvino told E! Online at the Emmy Awards Performers Peer Group Celebration in Los Angeles earlier this week (July 28).
Sorvino also revealed that the film’s screenwriter, Robin Schiff, is keen to make a follow-up film too, saying: “Me and Lisa and Robin would love to do a sequel. We have asked Disney before. It’s Disney that has to decide to say yes. I don’t think they realise what a cult phenomenon it has become. I mean, people dress up as us for Halloween!”
The 46-year-old actress also said that she had been inundated with requests for a sequel while making at an appearance at Comic-Con 2014 in San Diego last week.
“People were like, ‘Why aren’t Romy and Michele at Comic-Con?’ I was like, ‘It’s not a current movie. It’s a while ago!’ And then it was like, ‘When are you coming back? When are you going to come here for a sequel?”
A TV film prequel – Romy and Michele: In the Beginning – was aired in 2005, starring Katherine Heigl and Alexandra Breckenridge in the title roles. The film was critically panned and attracted poor ratings despite featuring an appearance from Paula Abdul as herself.
