RuPaul believes his Emmy win is merely about the mainstream “appearing to be more accepting”

By Josh Lee

While RuPaul’s recent Emmy win was hailed as a milestone for the world of drag, the drag superstar himself believes that the mainstream acceptance that the award represents is only skin-deep.

In an interview with Forbes Women, he explains: “The Emmy has more to do with a certain of trend towards appearing to be more accepting.”

Despite the scene exploding into the mainstream in recent years, RuPaul maintains that drag is still a form of outcast art. Because the “status quo is a male dominated society,” he says, for “a man to do drag in our culture is akin to an act of treason.”

RuPaul was speaking to Forbes women on feminism, finding yourself and the strength of vulnerability in the recent interview.
