Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has claimed that Guinness were “bullied by gay organisations” into pulling sponsorship from the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade yesterday (March 17).

The drinks-maker refused to sponsor the parade when the event’s planners banned marchers from carrying pro-gay signs and gay venue Stonewall Inn refused to sell Guinness, similar to the boycott of Russian vodka.

This prompted Murdoch, the owner of multinational mass media company News Corp, to pitch in on Twitter asking Irish people to boycott Guinness.

Gay rights became a hot topic in the lead-up to the Boston and New York City St Patrick’s Day parades – with the mayors of both cities opting not to attend their respective events in support of the LGBT community.
