Ryan Murphy reveals father “beat him bloody” with a belt after finding out he was gay
The American Horror Story creator has opened up about his traumatic coming out experience.
American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has opened up about his traumatic relationship with his father, revealed his father beat him with a belt after finding out he was gay.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association last Friday (January 5) about his upcoming show Pose, Murphy revealed one of the show’s characters’ coming out experience mirrors his own, Deadline reports.
According to Murphy, one of the scenes in the show features a character’s father finding out he’s gay before beating him “bloody with a belt”.
Murphy said: “That happened to me. That was my coming-out experience with my father.”
The 52-year-old producer then spoke about how much everything had changed since the 1980s, the era in which Pose is set.
“I can’t believe my life and can’t believe that things have changed so radically in my lifetime,” he said.
“If you asked me then if I would be allowed to be married and have children like you, I never would have believed it.”
Pose, set in 1980s New York, is loosely based on the cult classic film Paris Is Burning and will look at the rise of drag ball culture. The set to make TV history by featuring the largest cast of transgender actors ever.
Murphy went on to described himself as a survivor, saying he feels a responsibility to give back and support people who “still don’t feel included.”
“Now is the time to tell this story, about this group of people who, sadly are more and more disenfranchised and cut off,” he said.
“We want to celebrate them… The timing of this show is very important.”
Meanwhile, Murphy has teased what fans can expect from the upcoming eighth season of American Horror Story.
Pose is set to air on FX this summer.
