Same-sex couple make history as the first to marry on British military base

An army sergeant and his partner have made history as they became the first same-sex couple to wed on a British army base and the first to take place on an overseas army base.

Alastair Smith of the 2nd Battalion, married longtime partner Aaron Weston last month in Dhekelia, Cyprus, according to BT.

Mike Wigston, the Air Vice Marshal and commander and administrator of the base, approved and conducted the ceremony himself.

Prior to the wedding, Smith confessed in his blog that he was worried about coming out in case it ruined his career. But when he finally did it, he had the full support of his battalion behind him. Speaking to BT, Smith said:

“As well as having the great honour of being able to serve in an infantry battalion in the British Army, it’s also an honour to be able to commit myself to my husband with the full backing and support of the British Army in the unique environment that Cyprus offers.”

“IN a country that is pushing forward on matters of gender and equality, both Cyprus and the SBAA have been massively supportive. We are proud to be able to serve and live in this community.”

Smith’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Davies also spoke and that he was “delighted” that Smith was able to get married.

“On behalf of the Battalion and wider ‘Tigers’ community, we wish them the very best of happiness for the future.”

This is another big move from the British Army as last month a transgender soldier became the first women to serve on the front line.
