Same-sex couples to take part in Valentine’s Day Promenade in Bristol today

By Samuel McManus

Same-sex couples will today take part in a Valentine’s Day Promenade in Bristol with the hope of normalising PDAs by gay and lesbian couples.

Taking place on Park Street, the event has been organised by the HandsTogether Campaign which, according to the Bristol Post, claims that “despite major strides in giving same-sex relationships equal status before the law, gay couples are still reluctant to display affection in public as much as straight couples.”

Although it is a march for same-sex couples, the event organisers are also looking for support from straight couples.

A spokesperson for the event says: “We want it to be just a normal Sunday morning on Park Street. The only difference will be same-sex couples showing their affection for each other in the same way we accept straight people doing so, such as holding hands.

“Bristol is our launch city because we’re locally based but we will be announcing further events in other towns and cities. In time, we hope no one will raise an eyebrow when they see gay couples showing affection in public in ways that are no more and no less acceptable than their straight friends.”
