Same-sex marriage in motion: Epic map charts spread of equality across Europe

By Troy Nankervis

We’ve come a long way since 2001, and to put the progress of equality into plain view, our friends at Gay Star News have published an epic map that uses motion graphics to chart the progress of same-sex marriage and gay rights in Europe over the last 15 years.

“We’re still pretty far from same sex marriage being legalised worldwide but slowly things are changing,” they write.

The short video starts with the passing of marriage equality in the Netherlands in 2001, becoming highlighting other important victories for gay rights, including the passing of gay marriage in Belgium during 2003, and then in Spain in 2005, through to Northern Ireland becoming the first country to pass gay marriage via a public vote in 2015.
