Selfridges to launch gender-neutral clothes department
By Nick Bond
Selfridges department store have announced they are scrapping their menswear and womenswear departments and “sweeping away the traditional sartorial gender binaries.”
In their place? Agender, a three story, gender-neutral department filled with unisex clothing.
Covering three floors of Selfridges’ Oxford Street store, the Agender installation will kick off on March 12 with a one-off collection from Swedish designer HAAL (pictured).
“Moving away from the tradition of a societal and sartorial binary gender definition, we will take our customers on a journey where they can choose to shop and dress without limitations or stereotypes,” Selfridges promises of the new gender-neutral store makeover.
Designs by labels including Ann Demeulemeester, Comme des Garçons, Meadham Kirchoff and Gareth Pugh will also feature in the lineup, and photography film, music and design pieces exploring the idea of gender will also be on display in store.
This gender revolution isn’t here to stay, though – Agender will be in Selfridges until mid-April.
