Several men reportedly arrested in Saudi Arabia in response to viral gay wedding video
The video features two men walking down the aisle to music and being sprayed with confetti
Authorities in Saudi Arabia have reportedly arrested several men and carried out raids in response to a video featuring a supposed gay wedding.
The video clip, which went viral on social media, reportedly shows two men dressed in traditional Saudi clothing walking down an aisle to music while confetti is sprayed around them by onlookers.
The wedding was reportedly held last week in the Aradiyat governate, near the holy site of Mecca.
News site Alaraby reports that authorities have since carried out raids and arrested several people in connection with the video.
Aradiyat official Ali bin Youssef al-Sharif revealed those arrested are being investigated in preparation for their “referral to a public prosecutor.”
He also warned that Saudis must adhere to the “morals and virtuous values of this blessed country.”
After the alleged video went viral, many social media users expressed outrage while others were more positive about the event and praised the country’s new leader Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
Homosexual activity is punishable by flogging, imprisonment and death in Saudi Arabia and same-sex marriage is illegal, prompting many to believe that the clip is a hoax and not official.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
