A man has been sentenced to death for murdering a gay couple he met on Craigslist in 2010.
Peter Avsenew, 32, from Florida, met Steven Adams and Kevin Powell after he placed an advert on Craigslist and moved in with them only a few weeks before their deaths, Local 10 News reported.
The couple were found shot dead and wrapped in blankets on Boxing Day back in 2010 and Avsenew was convicted on murder.
In court, it was alleged that Avsenew – who was a sex worker – was found in the couple’s car and the prosecution added he had used their credit cards.
The defence claimed he stole the items after discovering the couple were dead, however, his mother turned him into the police when he unexpectedly turned up at her home in central Florida.
She even testified against him in court.
Avsenew allegedly showed no remorse over the murders and sent a hand-written letter to the court saying it was his duty to “cull the weak and timid from existence”.
The letter read: “It is my duty as a white man to cull the weak and timid from existence.
“I will always stand up for what I believe in and eradicate anything in my way. Homosexuals are a disgrace to mankind and must be put down. These weren’t the first and won’t be the last.
“I must secure an existance (sic) for white people and a future for white children.
“I regret nothing and am proud of every choice I’ve made in my life. … I will not ask for mercy and am not sorry.”
He also allegedly said in June: “I wholeheartedly have nothing to lose and I’m going to take it out on everybody I can.”
