Team GB men’s gymnasts make it through to Rio 2016 final
By Will Stroude
It’s been an incredible few years for British gymnastics. Back in 2008, became the first British gymnast to win a medal in any individual gymnastic event since 1908.
In 2012, former Attitude cover star Smith repeated that success with a silver medal – and was joined on the podium by Max Whitlock, who recently showed off the skills that got him to London and Rio in a video interview.
Today, home-grown talent is competing seriously with countries that have traditionally dominated the discipline, such as Japan, America and Russia – showing just how far we’ve come.
And this weekend was no different, with the men’s artistic gymnastics team qualifying for the finals. Speaking about their success, Max Whitlock said: “The team has pulled together really well and I’m really pleased to have come up first in the floor and pommel.
“This is probably one of the strongest teams we’ve ever had and the 2015 World Championships when we came second to China really proved that. We need to use the experience we’ve got and go out there and enjoy it.”
The boys will now battle for a medal later this evening (August 8). But whether or not they make it to the podium, they can be proud to have contributed to the continual rise of the sport in Britain, and generating a national thirst crisis in the process.
