Rick Perry, the Republican Governor of Texas, has admitted he “stepped right in it” with recent remarks that have been interpreted as anti-gay.

Earlier this month (June), when asked whether he considers homosexuality to be a disorder, Perry told an audience that much like he chooses not to be an alcoholic, he believes gay people can choose not to be gay.

The potential 2016 Republican Presidential nominee attempted to clarify his controversial comments during a dinner hosted by the Christian Science Monitor on Thursday (June 19), reports The Advocate.

Perry said of the furore: “I got asked about issues, and instead of saying, ‘You know what, we need to be a really respectful and tolerant country to everybody,’ and get back to talking about, whether you’re gay or straight, you need to be having a job.”

The 64-year-old politician then added: “I readily admit I stepped right in it.”

Meanwhile, the Republican Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, has criticised Perry for his seemingly anti-gay comments – click here for the full story.
