By Micah Sulit

NBC Nightly News

made history last night when Thomas Roberts stepped in as anchor. The MSNBC journalist became the first openly gay anchor of an evening newscast on a leading US network, The Advocate reported.

Roberts, 42, told The Advocate that it was a “huge honour”.

The newscast led with a story on Donald Trump’s controversial comments on Senator John McCain’s war record. Incidentally Roberts, along with Cheryl Burke, recently bowed out of their Miss USA 2015 co-hosting duties following Trump’s derogatory remarks about immigrants. NBC pulled the program and cut ties with Trump.

Roberts came out at a gay and lesbian journalists’ conference in 2006 and is married to Patrick Abner. He previously worked for CNN.
