Tim Minchin has revealed that he is working on a Groundhog Day stage musical.

The star is currently adapting the 1993 comedy-drama alongside the film’s original scriptwriter Danny Rudin, as well as Matilda musical director Matthew Warchus.

The stage adaptation of Matilda was Minchin’s first musical, and began its West End run in October 2011.

Minchin revealed in a blog post that he is working on an “instantly recognisable, and utterly different” adaptation of Groundhog Day.

He wrote: “The central conceit is perfectly suited to the theatre, in my opinion. In fact, I think many of its ideas could be enhanced by the stage. It has the potential to be complex, dark, visually fascinating, and thematically rich, whilst still being a joyous romantic comedy with cool tunes and lots of gags.”

He added: “We’re aiming for a workshop sometime towards summer, and hopefully we’ll have it on stage within a couple of years – but who knows? Maybe the whole project will get caught in a temporal vortex and we won’t be able to finish writing it until we’ve achieved wisdom.”

Groundhog Day starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell and and centred on bad-tempered weatherman Phil Connors, who found himself stuck in a seemingly never-ending time-loop. Watch a trailer for the film below:
