Tom and Dustin reveal sex of baby as they open up about surrogacy decision

Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black have revealed the sex of their baby as they open up for the first time about their decision to use a surrogate.

The A-list couple, who announced that they were set to become parents by sharing a picture of an ultrasound scan on social media on Valentine’s Day (February 14), have now confirmed that they’re expecting “a little boy” via a surrogate mother.

Appearing on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, Tom and Dustin said that they’d know the baby’s sex since the time of the ultrasound scan earlier this year.

“We’re gonna have a little boy”, Tom 23, revealed.

His Oscar-winning screenwriter husband Dustin, 43, chimed in: “You find out at the scan. They zoom in on every little body part!”

Of the moment the ultrascan took place, Tom recalled: “I had no idea what to expect going into that scan. I remember feeling quite nervous but excited about what was going to happen.

“The baby was moving. Just to see your child move and know there’s going to be a screaming, crying, sleeping, pooping machine!”

Despite knowing the sex of the baby, there’s one thing Tom and Dustin don’t know, and that’s who the biological father is. And the couple say they intend to keep it that way – at least for now.

“I know there’s been one question that lots of people have asking about, about who the biological father is,” Tom explained. “That’s something we’ve been very adamant about not knowing, or not ever wanting to know, because they are our children.”

Dustin added: “We did it in a way that we can not know for as long as we’d like to not know.”

Olympic diver Tom, who says he and Dustin wanted a child “more than anything in the world”, explained that the couple want their baby’s surrogate to be involved in his life growing up.

“We’ve always said we’d be very open and honest with our child. If they ask questions and they want to know how they came into this world, you have to be very clear and share the experiences we’ve had,” the Rio 2016 bronze medalist said.

“I’ve been writing down a diary of every single step that we’ve gone through so we can explain it to our child.

“Once the child is born, it’s up to the parents how much or how little the surrogate stays involved, but for us, we love her so much that I can’t imagine not ever seeing her again because we want her to be part the journey of the kids growing up too.”

Tom and Dustin wed in May last year after four years of dating, but despite their position as one of the UK’s most high-profile and popular same-sex couples, the pair have faced a fairdegree of criticism over their decision to start a family via surrogate – much of it rooted in homophobia.

Asked about the backlash from bigots, Tom told Cotton: “When people judge about us using a surrogate, there are lots of people in this world that can’t have kids, wherever it’s due to fertility issues or health issues, whatever it may be, I don’t think there would be as much drama if it was a straight couple.

“Take Kim Kardashian, she used a surrogate for her latest child, and there wasn’t any issue with it, so for us there is an element of difference in the way we’ve been treate.”

Dustin added: “I was shocked to have this response to us having a child.”

Tom went on to explain that he and Dustin, who have both lost close family members to cancer in recent years, would invest everything into creating a loving home for their son.

“When I came out and told my mum and my family that I was in love with Lance and we were together, the first thing that always worried me was that I was never gonna be able to have children,” the former Attitude cover said.

“The thought of not being able to have children made me really sad. It made me think, what am I gonna do, I’ve always wanted a family. So that’s when we started to look into surrogacy.

“We’ve never been so sure about anything in our whole entire lives.”
