Uber offer free trips to LGBT venues and landmarks in honour of Orlando
From Atlanta to Washington throughout the weekend, Uber will be offering its customers free rides (as long as they don’t exceed $20) in 41 cities across Canada and the United States.
The fast-growing company says it will provide the rides “to and from places that are important to the history and culture of the local LGBT community.’’
Uber said on its website: “Like people across the world, we were deeply shocked and saddened by the recent murders at a gay nightclub in Orlando.
“The world is a brighter and better place when we are all free to be ourselves. And we want to bring people together, no matter who you are or where you’re from.”
Uber also made a point of encouraging users to make donations for the victims of Orlando through the OneOrlando Fund which was set up by the city’s Mayor, Buddy Dyer. It endeavours to provide support to the victims of the Pulse disaster and their families. 49 lost their lives, and 53 were injured.
A tribute on wheels that will, as well as honouring Orlando’s victims and the LGBT community, do the company some good; they’ve face several allegations of poor treatment towards gay couples by drivers this year.
