Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie: ‘If you’re offended by gay sex on TV, don’t watch it’
By Josh Haggis
Ugly Betty
star Michael Urie has criticised Billy Crystal’s recent comments about gay sex on television.
Crystal – who played one of US TV’s first ever gay characters on 1970’s sitcom Soap – argued this month (January) that the media’s portrayal of gay sex scenes is becoming ” a little too much” for him, going on to say that he doesn’t want it “shoved” in his face. Find out more here.
The comedian later attempted to clarify his comments, saying that he didn’t intend to give the impression that he was only referring to gay sex.
In a new interview, openly gay former Ugly Betty actor Michael Urie has responded to Crystal’s comments by suggesting that people who think there is too much gay sex on TV should just “change the channel and not watch it”.
“I don’t think it’s overexposed,” he told NewNowNext. “If gay sex on TV is too much for you, change the channel and don’t watch it, it’s not for you. I think there is far too much football on TV. But I’m not going around saying they should take football off the air; I’m changing the channel.”
Meanwhile, How To Get Away With Murder creator Shonda Rhimes was recently forced to defend the popular drama’s gay sex scenes – find out more here.
