US church redefines marriage to include gay couples

By Josh Haggis

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has become the biggest Protestant religion in the US to support same-sex marriage.

The group, which has over 1.8 million members throughout America, has amended its definition of marriage to include “a commitment between two people”. The groundbreaking decision, which will allow gay couples to have a religious wedding ceremony, will come into force on June 21.

“So many families headed by LGBTQ couples have been waiting for decades to enter this space created for their families within their church communities,” said the Rev. Robin White, according to LGBTQNation.

A number of the church’s more conservative congregations left the denomination back in 2011, after it became one of the first to officially approve the ordination of gay clergy and pastors.

Meanwhile, US support for same-sex marriage has never been higher, according to a recent poll – find out more here.
