US government announces appointment of LGBT Rights Envoy

The US government has announced plans to appoint a new openly gay LGBT rights envoy.

The role – which will be appointed by US Secretary of State John Kerry – has been created in an effort to help promote LGBT rights across the world. John

“When Secretary Kerry came here, he made it clear he was looking for new initiatives to make a mark on gay rights,” said a spokesperson for Kerry. “He reminded everyone that one of the first bills he introduced as a senator was gay rights legislation and that his very last speech as a senator included words on this very issue.”

The announcement follows the development of the US government’s International Human Rights Defense Act, which would create a group of representatives at the State Department who would help coordinate efforts to help prevent and respond to the discrimination of LGBT people around the world – find out more here.
