US TV presenter Kelly Ripa was among those honoured at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York yesterday (May 9).
The talk show host was presented with the Excellence in Media Award in recognition of her advocacy for gay issues.
Ripa, who hosts Live With Kelly and Michael, told the crowd that she found it odd that she “should be celebrated for treating people like people”.
MSNBC news anchor Thomas Roberts won the Vito Russo Award for promoting equality in the gay community. He was presented the award by Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter.
“It was liberating, and frightening as hell,” Roberts said of coming out in 2006. “People like me were considered immoral at best, a joke,” Roberts said, adding that there is still “a long way to go.”
Sports Illustrated won for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage, with gay athletes Jason Collins and Michael Sam accepting the award.
Scandal star Kerry Washington was among the winners at the GLAAD awards handed out in Los Angeles last month. http://attitude.co.uk/the-imitation-game-kerry-washington-honoured-at-glaad-media-awards/
