Vogue make history by profiling a trans model for the first time
By Josh Haggis
Vogue have profiled a transgender model for the first time in the magazine’s history.
Andreja Pejic, 23, was discovered at the age of 17 while working in McDonald’s in her native Australia, and has since gone on to become an internationally-recognised model. During her five-year-long career, she has modelled for international brands including Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs and DKNY, and has appeared on the cover of French Vogue and Elle.
Now, she appears in a four-page spread for the May issue of US Vogue, making her the first trans model to have ever been profiled within the iconic magazine’s pages.
“If at the beginning of my career in the modeling industry or half way through it or even this time last year you told me that I would end up having a 4 page feature in AMERICAN VOGUE I would have probably told you “oh I dunno about that! That might be a bit difficult to achieve in the near future,” she wrote when she shared the news on Instagram.
“In fact I was told by various people many times over that the chances of me ending up on these pages were slim to none. So you can only imagine what I’m feeling right now,” she added.
Meanwhile, Laverne Cox has posed naked for Allure magazine this month (April) in an effort to help prove that trans women are beautiful – take a look here.
