Watch: Aussie rugby player grabs opposition player’s package

By Will Stroude

To be quite honest, we have enough trouble getting our heads round rugby, but our interest in the sport was piqued over the weekend after a video from down under of Newcastle forward Korbin Sims grabbing his former teammate Willie Nelson’s, well, willy on the pitch went viral.

Sims was caught on camera having a cheeky fondle of Mason’s crotch as the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles player prepared to play the ball during the second half of  Newcastle’s 30-10 loss to at Brookvale Oval on Sunday (May 10).

The pair were teammates for Newcastle between 2012 and 2014 and 35-year-old Mason – who didn’t even flinch as the pass was made – described it as a bit of banter between two friends.

“Offended? Please. I think it’s hilarious,” Mason said. “I hope he doesn’t [get charged for the incident] because me and Korbin are really good mates and I think it was unlucky because of the timing of it all.

“I knew what he was doing. I was talking to him as he was doing it. I didn’t even flinch.”

The ‘Williegate’ scandal soon went viral on social media, and while the National Rugby League (NRL) has confirmed that Sims will receive a warning letter following the incident, Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley has said the team will not be taking any action against Sims.

Meanwhile, Mason added: “It was quite funny to me. He’s just a good young kid and I would hope that nothing is done because of it.

“It’s just two good teammates from the last three years having a good old… just having a good reacquaintance.”

Personally, we can’t help but think back to last December, when Bristol Rovers footballer Lee Mansell was booked during a match after kissing Gateshead’s JJ O’Donnell on the pitch. Our PE classes we never quite like this…
