BBC News anchor Clive Myrie raised a few eyebrows during ‘The Papers’ last night after labelling homohobic world champion boxer Tyson Fury a “dickhead” live on air.
The 51-year-old presenter was hosting a discussion about the recent controversy surrounding the heavyweight champion’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year nomination when he decided to drop some truth bombs on his two unsuspecting guests.
As his guest questioned whether the prestigious award should be based on sporting achievement or sportsmanship, Myrie interrupted to say: “It’s both. You cannot – it’s after the watershed – you cannot be a dickhead and win Sports Personality of the Year”.
The BBC has since apologised “to any viewers who were offended by the language Clive Myrie used” – though frankly we think he should be nominated for an award of his own.
Tens of thousands of people who have already signed a Change.org petition calling for Fury’s removal from the shortlist over his previous sexist and homophobic remarks.
The boxer has since called those complaining “50,000 wankers”, and told them they can “suck [his] balls”.
In a statement to Attitude, the BBC defended their decision to nominate the controversial sportsman, saying that “the nominees for BBC Sports Personality of the Year are decided on their sporting achievements.
“As Fury became heavyweight champion of the world over the weekend, the panel feel that he should be a contender for this year’s award.”
